Can anyone tell me if Great /Little HORMEAD Hertsfordshire is very far from Middlesex ?

Great Hormead is at least 20 miles from Middlesex County boundary.

Much depends on Where and When. Great Hormead hasn't moved :) but Middx has. Back in C18 it covered most of what we now call Greater London north of the river (thames). When I was a kid, up to about 1974, (no ribald comments please - I'm not that old) it was a sausage shaped county wrapped round the top of the county of London. They then abolished it as an administrative county, but it still existed as the postal address of some of the northern london boroughs (Enfield, round to Twickenham).

Try looking on Rootsweb for the old counties, and on www.streetmap.co.uk (http://www.streetmap.co.uk) for recent maps.

Thanks Clive. I have an ancestor who said she was born in Hormead 1801 but most of their lives seem to be around Middlesex. Cheers. Pam

Same goes for a lot of the Blackaby tribe who were in the Hormead and Hunsdon area at same time - all part of the drift of the rural population towards London.

Any names I should look out for???

Hi Clive. I think Sarahs maiden name was Bradford/Brandford. Sarah says she ws born in Hormead but I think her mother was born in Middlesex. Sarah married a Paul Rider who was a publican at the Rose and Crown Long Lane Bermonsey 1839-1841. in 1821. He was at the Grapes Horsley Down. Their children are all born Middlesex. Cheers

The NBI2 has 101 burials for the name BRADFORD (no Brandford) in Herts
but none show in either Great or Little Hormead, year range is from 1800 - 1878.
