Hello folks,
Cruising around internet websites on forenames, it appears that Coiler is a Gaelic name, one variant being Cuyler. Now, a certain Coiler Robertson emigrated from Perthshire to Vic, Australia in 1839, and descendants use the spelling and pronunciation Collier. I am wondering whether the name Coiler in fact would have been pronounced as Collier. If I put Coiler in the IGI it comes up with Colyer, and I see that Collier is a sept of the Robertson clan. So I'm thinking that the spelling Coiler was pronounced Collier. Can anyone comment on that?
With thanks,
Lenore Frost
