greetings

Can anyone point me in the direction of finding shipping/immigration/marriage lists to Australia for after 1859 please?
All I have is a marriage date 1871 in Rockhampton for my gg grandfather, Lewis Gibson, from Ayrshire, Scotland. He married Agnes Mclymont Cherry. They had 14 children, 6 born in Australia, the rest born in NZ

many thanks in advance
Julianne

Hi Julianne,

The following Link was posted recently by Lenore Frost from Victoria, Australia who also uses these forums:

She has many links on her web page which you may find useful.

Best Wishes

Queensland certificates can be purchased from this place

http://www.justice.qld.gov.au/bdm/forms.htm#5

The identification requirements are only for recent events - less than 80 years for marriages, and 100 years for births. (Before Mar 1856 records were held by New South Wales) A marriage should give you both couples names, residences, birthplaces, ages, occupations as well as both parents names and mothers maiden names.

Further to above, it is probably a good idea to ask for a marriage index lookup on a relevant Queensland forum - in case the date you have from another source is inaccurate, as they would still charge for a no result. Usually there is an advantage in having the registration number, the certificate may be cheaper.

Hi

Lewis is not listed in the list of Assisted Immigrants on the Queensland State Archives site however that does not mean that he did not emigrate to Queensland as there are a number of ships that arrived in the 1860s that do not appear on this list.

Lewis married Agnes Cherry on the 9th February 1871 registrtaion number 1871/000473

This may possibly be your Agnes coming to Queensland (No Agnes Cherry born in Queensland per the indexes)

Arriving in Queensland 13 Oct 1863 by the ship Rockhampton listed in IMM 112 page Microfilm 1696 From the online index mentioned above.

Agnes Cherry 9 years
Charles 4 years
Elizabeth 11y
Jane 18y
Jonas 39y
Mary 38 y
Mary 14y
Matthew 7y
Sarah 5y
William 16y

Possible death for Jonas per the Queensland BDM index is Jonas Cherry father Joseph Cherry no mother listed died 9 May 1885 reference 1885/004336

Possible entry for death for Mary is
Mary Cherry no parents listed died 10 Mar 1884 reference 1884/001483
Unfortunately witht eh Queensland indexes apart from the Brisbane entries no other areas are listed in Queensland ie just Brisbane or anywhere in the rest of Queensland.

Interestingly there was an entry for a marriage of a Mary Cherry and a David Gibson 4 Aug 1868 reference 1868/000460

Helen
