I have a copy of a naval record via DocumentsOline from the National Archives, and the ratings are shown as Boy Ast, ERA App, and ERA v to ERA iii. I assume Boy Ast = boy assistant, but what does ERA stand for?
It also mentions a badge granted in 1924, looks like G 1st.
Can someone help please.

Barrie.

Engine Room Attendant?

(This is after a quick shufty on the web, you understand. I'm not that clever at 6am!)

(Or at any other time, really.):D

I think you'll find that's Engine Room Artificer, moving from Apprentice, to Fifth class, then Third class. In other words, someone who worked in the engine room of the ship.

Can't help on the medal though.

I think this is probably - Good Conduct Badge - you'll often see that several are awarded

Many thanks for the replies regarding ERA's - interesting to note that this particular person rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Navy.
