Thanks Jeremy,

much appreciated, sounds like you had to find them among the crew!
I thought Farlness would be Foulness! I do not think that I have encountered a family that moved about so much. :D

thanks again
Christine

Many thanks Debbie,

that is possibly William Junior thanks - but I do not expect to be going down the kids lines, so I will not ask you to fish him back out for me :D Have to laugh at Mary's birthplace - Ireland Donegal has turned into Toreland Dorset - I know handwriting is difficult to read, so I shouldn't laugh. :D

thanks again
Christine :)

Hi Christine,
I looked at the 1891 census and the birthplace for wife Mary is given as Dorset, Portland. Could be a second wife? Caroline M Dau aged 25 born Margate is also with them besides the 2 daughters mentioed by Debbie.

I noticed a marriage between William English and Mary Pitt in Jun qtr 1853 in Lymington, Hampshire (vol 2b pg 805). Given that Edward's middle name was Pitt, might this be they?

Thanks Jeremy for the extra daughter. It is only the 1891 census that has the different birthplace for Mary - you have a different interpretation of the Torland as Portland - I would imagine it is really Ireland. Mary also shows up in the 1901 index as born Ireland abt 1833 so we are still dealing with the same wife.

Thanks Debbie, I also found that English/Pitt marriage and think it would be the right one - especially as Edward is the only one with a surname as a middle name and fits in with the childrens ages and also the location of . I found most of the birth regs also on FreeBMD. I found I couldn't help myself and had to stop from following up marriages, etc as it is getting too far away from my real line - this is the eldest child of a second marriage of a ggg great uncle after the Randall spouse died (1813) :D

Hi Christine,
After I suggested that Mary may be a second wife I also checked the 1901 census and as you rightly say it does give the birthplace as Ireland. However the 1891 birthplace of Dorset, Portland is quite clear and could no way be interpreted as Ireland. I suppose it depends on who the informant was or what the Census enumerator thought he heard.
Cheers Jeremy.

Thanks Jeremy, for the further clarification - probably bad handwriting by the person filling out the householders schedule, and then clearly written in the enumeration book.
