I am seeking information on my Taylor ancestors who sailed from
Deptlow 31 January 1850 on the ship 'Duchess of Northumberland' for
Calcutta.
I wondering where I could obtain a passengers list, as I hope to
find out what Taylor family members were on board.
On the 17 December 1852 John Taylor sailed back into Blackwall,
England on the ship 'Madagascar'

You are unlikely to find a passenger list.

Have a read of TNA's research guide
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=106

The only other place I can think that might be worth checking for information is the British Library's India Office records, have a browse of the web-site
http://www.bl.uk/collections/orientaloffice.html

If the family emigrated with assistance under the Poor Law Amendment Act and you know the parish that they came from, you might try the records held in class MH12 at TNA.
