Mrs Pole

There is not a Parish of STOURTON in Worcestershire , and I cannot locate a Stourton Castle in Nicolas Pensver's " The Buildings of Engand :Worcestershire "!

There are 2 Stourton Castles that I have heard of - one in Kinver Staffordshire ( not far from the Shropshire and Worcesterhsire Border ) see-
http://homepage.mac.com/philipdavis/English%20sites/3344.html
NB Kinver is often spelt Kinfare in early records.

The other existed during the Civil War , in the area of Frankley and Bewdley , and quite a bit of action took place there about the time of the Battle of Worcester c 1650 - see
http://www.virtualbrum.co.uk/history/civilwar.htm
In fact this could, because of Boundary changes, be the same place as above- Bewdeley /Frankley are not far from Kinver.

Does your Grandmother appear on either the 1891 or 1901 Census ? The census entry may give a clue as to where she was employed and the area.

This is a link to a Web Page - about Reginald POLE 1500 -1558 , one time Archbishop of Canterbury ,who was born at STOURTON Castle - Kinver

Hope this information is helpful -

Hi, Mrs. Pole,
Better late than never!! Probably the castle you are referring to is the one just outside Kinver. The Black Country Bugle newspaper did a couple of articles on the castle sometime last year. Just type in 'Black Country Bugle' and this should take you right to the newspaper. If you have any difficulty contact me off line on [email protected] and I will see what I can do for you.
