sueSue,

Your LEE family is in the 1901 census at 1 Penzer Street -- do you have this information? [Reference: RG13/2758 Folio 35 Page 2]

Sue,

In the 1881 census, it appears that John LEE/LEA has been mistakenly enumerated as John Harry PENZER. You can access the entry for yourself -- if you haven't already done so -- by doing a search for John or his grandparents Job and Ann PENZER. [Reference RG11/2892 Folio 37 Page 1]

The 1861 census may hold the key to the mystery of John's mother:

There's a marriage record for Susan PENZER in the June quarter of 1868 in Stourbridge. One of the potential grooms is a William LEA. I think this is a good bet for you -- Reference: Volume 6c Page 195.

If we can assume that John's parents were Susan PENZER and William LEA and that they married sometime after 1861, then this is the most likely-looking William in the 1861 census:

Brettle Lane, Kingswinford, Staffordshire
RG9/2069 Folio 5 Page 10

John LEA Head Married 51 Glass Cutter [born] Ireland Cork
Hannah Do Wife " 50 [born] Do Do
William Do Son Un 18 Glass Cutter Staffordshire Kingswinford
David Do Son 10 Scholar Worcester Stourbridge
George Do Son 7 Do Do Do

The marriage certificate for Susan PENZER may help verify this information.

In the 1871 census, William LEA is a widower -- so far, this is adding up... Susan PENZER LEA probably died in childbirth or just after and baby John was left in the care of his maternal grandparents:

Sue,

I hope all this information at once isn't too overwhelming but your family has been very easy to track down in the censuses. You are lucky!

I think the following is probably your great grandmother Martha's family in 1891:

In the 1881 census, Martha is with her family and a two extra siblings, Thomas and Susannah. You can find the entry by looking up Martha SANT born in Wall Heath, Staffordshire about 1870. [Reference RG11/2892 Folio 29 Page 14]

There's a marriage record for a William SANT in the June quarter of 1845 in Stourbridge district. One of the possible brides listed in the index is a Hannah FREEMAN. [Reference: Volume 18 Page 601]

Note that the lodger in the BURY household in 1851 is a Thomas FREEMAN. Perhaps he is Hannah's brother...

Sue,

Going back to William LEA and the possibility that he may be the father of your great grandfather John LEA, I was curious about what happened to him after 1871...

A William LEA/LEE matching his exact description doesn't show up in the 1881 census but there is one who comes close as far as occupation and age are concerned: Willm. LEA, a boarder with a family named CLARE, age 38, living at 9 No. 1 Court, Russell St., [St. Helens] Eccleston In Prescot, Lancashire, . He's listed as single, a glass cutter and with Sunderland as his birthplace. [Reference: RG11/3736 Folio 5 Page 4]

In 1891, there's the following entry -- which looks promising:

6 Upper Vernon St, Clerkenwell, London
RG12/224 Folio 29 Page 49

William LEA Head M 47 Glass Cutter [born] Stourbridge
Louisa Do Wife M 44 Birmingham

Trish

Trish

...And...In 1901, William and Hannah are at a different address:

48 Manchester Rd, Tottenham, Middlesex
RG13/1256 Folio 67 Page 44

William LEA Head M 56 Brilliant Glass Cutter [born] Wilts Stourbridge
Louisa do Wife M 53 Warwick Birmingham
Elizabeth do Sister S 50 Parlour Maid [Domestic] Somerset Bristol

If you refer back to the LEA family in the 1851 census, you'll note that William does have a sister Elizabeth born in Bristol, however, she was a few years older older not younger. This doesn't necessarily mean the above entry isn't a match -- people routinely shaved years off their ages in the census or simply forgot how old they were. Discrepancies with birthplaces from one census to another is also a fairly common occurrence.

Hi,
Martha Sant was my great grandfather Samuel Sants sister. They lived at Wall Heath,Staffs. their father was William Sant (b Brockton,Staffs 1822 d Wall Heath 1918). Mother Hannah (nee Freeman) (b Sapey,Herefordshire 1825 d Wall Heath 1897). Hope this maybe of use and would also ask if you have any futher information on Martha's relatives in Wall Heath? Many thanks.

William was married prior to this to Anne Sant, they lived at South Piredon (Stone),Staffs. (see 1841 census). That marriage was (as far as I can discover) never annulled and certainly Anne lived well into her 60's.(In 1851 she has a 'lodger' from Sheffield living with her but retained the name Sant) It is probable Williams marriage to Hannah was bigamous.
