On the marriage cert. of my wifes mother and father (Gordan John Francis Peters & Patricia Sans), in the Fathers Name and Surname, it shows Herbert Francis Peters-Sans (16) for the grooms father. To the right of the columns and outside of the grid it has a ref. to "Sixteen DTN".

The puzzle is why has the grooms father suddenly acquired a hyphenated name which is also the surname of the bride?

What does the (16) mean?

Is the extra ref. Sixteen DTN referring to the (16) above.

If anyone can help, I will be most grateful.

It's a reference to a list of amendments in a register of amendments. It simply provides a means to follow it through and confirm that the certificate has been officially changed and not tampered with. It could simply be the correction of an accidental omission. mishearing or spelling mistake.
