I understand that my great-uncle (George Frederick Henley) served during WW2 as chief customs officer at St Katharine's Dock, London. Some time soon I shall have to bite the bullet and dive into the Customs records at the National Archive - but that will mean a long day trip as I live in Derbyshire. Are there any other sources of information that are a little more accessible (like online, perhaps) ?

Not online, no. In fact for WW2 I'm not sure how much you'd find at Kew. Bit recent for them really. Presumably you've read this -

There's CUST 39 which goes up to 1970 but possibly not much else.

You could try the London Gazette (which of course is online) which might contain the initial appointment and possibly promotions.

for the suggestion to look at the London Gazette - that's one I hadn't thought of !

Kew tell me that the WW2 records should be there - CUST 39/230 ought to have at least some of the details.
