Jean,

A few questions...

-- What were the first and last names of Mary's son?
-- Do you know if he was born before Mary married Thomas RICHARDS?
-- How have you linked Mary with Thomas if you haven't been able to find a record of their marriage?
-- Do you know Thomas's occupation?

Have you tried looking in the Welsh censuses for 1851-1871?

In 1871 there is a Mary & Thomas Richards at the same address as in 1881 (1 Marble Hall, Llanelly. Thomas is also there in 1891 & 1901, a widower). There is a Mary Walters, born 1832/3 at Llandybie, Carmarthenshire, an unmarried servant in both the 1851 & 1861 censuses. The Mary who is the wife of Thomas Richards was born in Conwil (a parish in Carmarthen itself). Benjamin Walters is described as a a lodger in Thomas & Marys's house in the 1881 census. He was born in Talog which is about 12 mile northwest of Carmarthen. I cannot say that this particular Mary is Benjamin's mother (or the one born in Llandybie for that matter!).

Hi Jean,
I queried the same question as Trish, how do you know Mary married Thomas Richards if you have not found a marriage. The 1881 census gives Benjamin Walters as a lodger in the house of Thomas Richards, are you just assuming that the wife Mary is Mary 'Walters' because if so I think it unlikely?
If Benjamin was related to Thomas Richards even through marriage it would be likely to say stepson or wife's son not just lodger. See if you can find Mary on 1881 census as Walters or see if she is recorded marrying or dying pre 1881.
Cheers Jeremy.

Thanks for replying, Benjamin Walters born 17/1/1859 to Mary Walters in Talog. No I can't find a marraige between Mary and Thomas but family story goes that Mary was working in Newton House in Llandeilo when she became pregnant about 28 years old. Thomas Richards lists Mary as his wife but that isn't definite. They dissappear from 1841 tmessage=Thanks for replying, Benjamin Walters born 17/1/1859 to Mary Walters in Talog.
