Thomas Smith born 1805 in Radway, was a master shoemaker aged 55 in Radway in the 1861 census - a widower, his wife Christiana died in 1852. He was living with his son Thomas and his daughters Mary and Sarah at the time.
A Thomas Smith died 4Q 1865 Banbury 3a 449 but as the personal details I gave (profession, age) didn't tally the ONS refused to send me the certificate. It may be that the death certificate carries erroneous information - that has been known - but I wasn't given any details. The FreeBMD reference doesn't give an age.
I have found no other of approximately the right age between 1861 and 1871.
To limit my research I would like to check his presence or absence in the 1871 census. Could somebody help me please?

Hi Ian

Looks like he's still around in 1881:)

Frazer and Lynda,

For what it's worth, Radway images seem to be missing from Ancestry's 1871 census offerings...

Can anyone else locate them?

I can't find the 1871 returns for Radway either. There are about 280 Radway born people in the Census, but none of them seem to fit your man.

Thank you everybody. I'll take a closer look at the 1891 death certificate - it looks right. He would be the first of my known male ancestors to reach such a ripe old age.

...I'll take a closer look at the 1891 death certificate - it looks right...Just to clarify:

-- Both uksearch and I could not find census returns for the town of Radway for 1871. We found people listed who were born in Radway and living elsewhere but not people living in Radway.

-- There definitely are census returns for Radway for 1851, 1861, 1881, 1891 and 1901 -- just not for 1871, apparently.

So, the death certificate is probably right -- in all likelihood, Thomas SMITH was born in Radway and living there at the time of the 1871 census. But the problem is that the census returns are missing for that area. Wouldn't you know it!

The death record Lynda references looks like a good match for your Thomas SMITH -- Thomas SMITH Death Age 85 March Qtr 1891 Banbury [Volume 3a Page 626]

Hello Trish,
I've just received the certificate which confirms we have the right person. The informant was his daughter Ann, married to my great-great grandfather, John Bachelor.
Thanks again,
Regards,
Ian Frazer
