I have a William Milward married to Mary Ann Hughes 14 Dec 1844. William was born c1818 Benton Square, Newcastle. Father Edward was possibly 1st [illgit] son of Edward Millward & Ann Wakefiled Aug 1793.

Suspect William had at least one brother - possibly Thomas Combey Milward b 1824.

My problem is that from 1793 til 1820, I can not find any evidence of Milward family in Longbenton [have searched index of Longbenton from 1723 to 1839]

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I can not get to the Northeast to do the research.

You've looked at an Index for Longbenton, but really need to see copies of the Registers. Are you near an LDS Family History Centre where you can order films you need to view for a smallish fee ?

I've looked at the 1851 Census and 1861 Census. I notice your William named a son Wakefield. In 1851 a Wakefield Milward born about 1810 North Shields is resident in All Saints, Newcastle.

It's such an unusual forename that there's likely to be a connection to your family. It may be worth looking at Tynemouth Parish (an adjacent Parish to Longbenton), which includes North Shields.

I had all of the data you gave except the 1810 birth of Wakefield in North Shields. This is odd cos I have subscription to The Genealogist and it gives no Milwards in 1851 census at all.

What was your source for the 1851 census?

We do have an LDS locally. I was a member but it closed for refurb and access is restricted but I will contact them again.

The use of mother's surname as second forename is common in our family - there were three Wakefields. My cousin is Thomas VASEY Millward after our grandmother Hannah Vasey.

I found the 1851 Census entry for Wakefield on Ancestry, but transcribed in the Index as MILLIARD.

That is the full entry - he is unmarried, no other family or residents with him.

Thanks Helen - I managed to track down wakefiled's birthday as 15 Jan 1810 and he was baptised in 26 June 1812, Christ Church Tynemouth. Father Edward listed as "of North Shields [Mariner] native of London, mother Ann Whitfield [transcription error of Wakefield?] native of Longbenton.

The Wakefield Millward who died aged 57 years old at death reg'd in Newcastle T. Mar qtr 1868 which tallies.
