Edward Clough and Ellen Jones of Backford then Chester

Edward Clough, the son of Samuel and Martha, was born 1840/41 in Backford (according to marriage and census records). He married Ellen Jones, born 1849/50 also at backford (again according to marriage and census records) on 29 Dec 1870 at St Oswalds Church, Backford.

The census records for 1851 and 1881 state
1851 CENSUS (taken 30 March 1851): Edward was 10 years old, a
scholar, living with his family in Backford and being born in Backford,
Cheshire.

1881 CENSUS: shows that Edward was 36 years old (this would mean that he was born in 1845 not 1841), born in Backford, employed as a Railway Laborer, and living with his wife, Ellen, at 60, Cornwall Street, Chester.

They had at least one child, a son, Charles, who was christened 6 May 1881 at St Oswalds Church, Backford

Has any one got any further info on thsi family, etc.

The Clough/Pemberton marriage was at St Hilary's, Wallasey, which is the parish church of where I live. They have the records at the library, so I'll nip up tomorrow & see if the film reader is free. As they only have the one reader & the library shuts at 1pm, it may have to wait until next week. It probably isn't your Edward, but you never know. I've already researched the Pembertons of Wallasey & of Bidston for other people.

Samuel Engless was born in Ireland, all the Cloughs were born in Cheshire. In the 1841 census the ages 15+ should have been rounded down to the nearest 5 years. In this case they were not. Also, the enumerator wrote that Thomas & William were twins. Any other twins in your family? :)

The census says Charles was born Newtown Cheshire but doesn't give an age. He was a scholar
Mary was born 1884 Cheshire scholar
Arthur was born 1886 Backford scholar
Ellen was born 1848 backforn

Interestingly on the census records there were 2 Edward Clough's both born about 1840 in Cheshire andboth with wives Ellen
