Hello West Riding folk,
I am seeking information on Ellen Scothron (alt. Scothorn) born approx. 1844 in Ulley, Treeton - between Sheffield and Rotherham. The earliest record I have of her is from the 1861 census when she was working as a servant in nearby Whiston. I know nothing of her parents or siblings and would appreciate any information on her and her family from the 1851 and 1841 censuses, and parish records if availabe. I beleive she married a George Curtis around 1865-68. Any information on this marriage would also be welcome.
Anyboby able to help?
Many thanks,
Mike

Hi!

I don't know if this is the same, as this Ellen is registered in the 1851 census index as aged 13 from North Sheffield.

Hi Mike,
The marriage of Ellen Scothron is Reg. June quarter 1867, Rotherham, Vol 9c Page 671 and as you suspect she married George Curtis. This will give you her father's name.
Cheers Jeremy.

Hi Mike,
Did you notice there is also John Scothorn (1842) and William Scothorn (1848), both born Ulley and both in the civil parish of Whiston and Hamlet of Gilfil., where Ellen is. Like Ellen they are both servants. All in a small Hamlet? My guess is they are her brothers or cousins at least.
Jeremy.

Hi Jan,
Thanks for that info. but I don't think it is the Ellen Scothron I am looking for as she was born in the Ulley/Treeton area. I suspect her father and mother may be called Charles and Elizabeth as this couple were living in Ulley in 1861. Hopefully in the 1851 census Ellen would still be living at home with her parents. Do you have access to the 1851 (and 1841) census for the Ulley/Treeton area?
Cheers,
Mike

Hi Jeeb,
Thanks for those snippets. As regards the 1861 census, yes I had noticed the two boys also working as servants in Ulley. I also noted that there was a Charles and Elizabeth Scothorn (note slightly different spelling) and family living in Ulley. I suspect that these may be her parents but need the 1851 census details as she should, hopefully, still be living at home.
Cheers,
Mike
