Folks,
Jules shows his place of birth as France when he marries Ann Williams in Australia in 1868,the couple had 4 children Annie,Maud,Jules and Einar.
The first 3 names are not a problem but Einar has thrown me,can anyone help me out with its origin and gender?
Thanks,
Eric

Hi Eric,

When and where was Einar born? The Australian BMD index CDs often state the gender even if not on the online versions.

My immediate reaction is that Einar is a male given name and has Old Norse/Scandinavian (including Icelandic) origins. Also used as a surname (derived from Einarsson - or Einarsdottir).

But that says nothing about why your people chose it as a given name!

They may simply have known someone with that as a given name or surname or have come across the name. And might have named a child after a friend (or minister) in his honour - or used the name simply because it appealed to them.

I put it in Google - it appears to be a boy's name :)

Hi Eric,

Mention of the 99 cents provided the clue you are looking in Victoria. The birth index on CD is silent as to gender.

Looking at occurrences of the name Einar on the CDs it appears as others have said to be male.
