In the post today I received the pile of death certifcates that I had ordered. |nopity| Fortunately all of them are my people!!

Two of them have thrown up interesting deaths.
One in 1929 was an accident at work. The death actually happened at St Thomas's Hospital London, but the victim lived and probably worked in Battersea. The death was registered in Lambeth... due to the fact he died in hospital. An inquest was held 4/2/1929.

The other one was a suicide in 1832 in Glascote Tamworth, due to carbon monoxide poisoning (head in gas oven!) Inquest 18/10/1932.

Both were no doubt reported in the local newspapers. I would like to find where, but need help with the papers. Any ideas?

The Tamworth Herald has been running since 1870. Perhaps the Staffordshire Archives could look the item up for you.

The 1929 accident - where was the inquest held? This may have a bearing on the newspaper in which it was reported.

Lambeth FHS (http://www.lambeth.gov.uk/Services/LeisureCulture/LocalHistory/FamilyHistory.htm) has a little note at the bottom of this page unfortunately it does not mention the newspapers names just where they are held.

I think that the South London Press (http://www.southlondon-today.co.uk/tn/index.cfm) was one.

It says: Coroner for London.

Tuh! Not too helpful, eh?

Okay, for Battersea, you could try the Battersea Boro' News. It seems to have covered 1929. Still checking out Lambeth.... :o

Edit: For Lambeth, you could try the "Brixton Free Press and Brixton News Gazzette", which became the "Brixton Free Press and Lambeth Borough News".

Good luck!

Lambeth documents are held in the Minet Library Archive in Camberwell. It may well be worth contacting them. They normally require you to visit the archive but if this is difficult for you it is probably worth asking, you never know, you may find someone is willing to help.

Hello Sue,

Well, I am pleased that one of the newspapers bore fruit. Suicide reports are very sad - my great grandfather's quite stunned me when I read it.

I hope that you manage to find the other report.

Well! South London Press got back to me a week or so ago. As it is some distance for me to travel, they kindly looked up the 1929 accident at work for me...and found it. Unfortunately it was in an awkward postion to photocopy, so I took the bull by the horns and went there yesterday.

Another sad report, but worth the travel.

The papers were in a leather bound volume and the report was right next to the spine, so they were right...it was impossible to photocopy.

I'll be after another report in Brighton soon, as soon as I get the death certifcate for the details. Any ideas where their papers are held??

Is it possible that you could take a copy with a digital camera from different angles?
Just a thought
