Am trying to find anything on my GG Grandfather.
Have him in the 1901 census at 35 High Street, Bunkers Hill, Higham Ferrers, Northhamptonshire.
Born 1855 married Sarah Ann ?

Hello Cheryl,

I see from the 1901 census (RG13; Piece: 1440; Folio: 6; Page: 4) that Sarah Ann was born in Warmington.

As marriages very often took place in the bride's parish, and Warmington falls into the Oundle registration district, could this be their marriage?

December quarter 1877, Oundle district, volume 3b, page 457:

George COX and Sarah Ann EDWARDS

Forgot to say: the marriage certificate should provide the names and occupations of both fathers and thus make it a bit easier to track the right birth certificates for the happy couple.

Also.....

On that 1901 census, the eldest boy is aged 20 - George. ;)

He was born in Elton - again only up the road from Warmington and therefore falling under the Oundle district - and this could be his birth:

George William COX, September quarter 1880, Oundle district, volume 3b, page 215.

The birth certificate would confirm mum's maiden name.

Thanks Jan, am flying on a whim at the moment. Got this info from moderator on rootschat.
Harry cox 1882 was my great grandfather. He is not listed on the 1901 census - presume he left home. His marriage cert shows father as George, carter by profession.
Dont have marriage cert for george or anything on him.

Have you found the family in 1891? That should then provide a birthplace for Harry and the other members could have a look for him in 1901.

(I really must get to bed as it is tomorrow here already.....)

Oh yes - George senior was a Carting Contractor in 1901, which ties in with Harry saying carter on the marriage certificate.

This looks like your family in the 1891 census of Higham Ferrars:

RG12/1210, folio 57, page 28
Bunkers Hill

George COX Head M 36 Agricultural Laborer Northants Warmington
Sarah A do Wife M 36 do do
John do Son S 12 Scholar do Dutton
George do Son 10 do do Elton
Harry do Son 9 do do Warmington
Charles do Son 5 do do Newton
Mabel do Daur 3 do Higham Ferrers
Arthur do Son 3 mo do do
+ 1 Lodger

Where did Harry marry your g grandmother? There is a Harry COX born c1882 at Oundle shown as a Soldier in Cheriton & Sandgate, Kent - is he a likely candidate at all?

Great. So this looks like Harry as an Inmate in the 1901 census of Cheriton & Sandgate:

RG13/851, folio 133, page 21
District Shorncliffe Camp

Harry COX Inmate S 19 Soldier Oundle Northampton

Thanks Janet, excuse my ignorance but when you say inmate is that a training camp for soldiers?

Hi Cheryl,

The Enumerator's description reads Name: Shorncliffe Camp Description: Military Camp Where situated: Cheriton & Sandgate

There are 166 pages for Shorncliffe Camp and the unmarried soldiers seem to be described as Inmates as far as I have looked.
