I was hoping someone might be able to help me. I am looking for John Edward Crouch b about 1827 Hulcote who married Mary Ann Goodman (b about 1832 Hulcote) in 1853 Hulcote. I was hoping to find if they had any children

Hi Fiona,

Have found the following in 1861:

Horsmoor Farm, Battlesden, Woburn

John Crouch, Head, mar, 66, Farmer 219 acres employing 6 men, 3 boys, b Littlington, Bedfordshire
Elizabeth Crouch, wife, 44, b Littlington (John's second marriage, perhaps?)
John Edward Crouch, son, widower, 34, Farmers Son, b Littlington
John G Crouch, grandson, 5, child school, b Littlington

Mary Ann Crouch, Oct to Dec 1859, Vol 3b, page 261, Woburn

Edit: for Littlington, please read Lidlington

Is this the John Edward CROUCH son of John and Elizabeth CROUCH (2nd wife) born Lidlington c1827 (very close to Hulcote)? If so, he is a widower by 1861 with 1 son as follows:

RG9/1003, folio 195, page 17/8
Horsmoor Farm

John CROUCH Head Mar 66 Farmer 219 acres empl 6 men, 3 boys Beds Lidlington
Elizth do Wife Mar 44 do do
John Edw do Son Widr 34 Farmers son do do
John G do Grandson Un 5 do do
+ 2 servants

I can't find another likely looking candidate and this John Edward is unmarried in the 1851 census which would fit in quite well. There is also the death registration of a Mary Ann CROUCH in the December qtr 1859 at Woburn reg district, vol 3b, page 261 which could be that of your Mary Ann.

Just had a rummage in 1871...

has John Crouch aged 15 boarding wih a Thomas Pickering (butcher) at East Street, Apsley Guise, Beds, and working as an apprentice.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth can be found in Turnpike Road, Lidlington, aged 54, Widow, formerly Farmer's Wife with grandaughter Emma M Crouch, aged 15.

Looks like both John and John Edward had died by 1871:

John Edward Crouch, aged 39, Woburn, Vol 3b, page 247, April to June 1866
John Crouch, aged 72, Woburn, Vol 3b, page 212, July to Sep 1866

If you check the IGI you will find the baptism of John Goodman Crouch in 1856 and a daughter Emma Mary Crouch in 1857 (both extracted entries so reliable)

And from the PR Transcripts of Lidlington:

12 September 1794 John son John and Ann CROUCH baptised. The CROUCH families go back quite a long way in Lidlington.

When I went back to the IGI I then found a marriage for Emma Crouch (m Frank Kingston 1883 Lidlington) so now I have a new branch to search so thank you very much for all of your help
