View Full Version : Prussian/Polish roots

Please can someone give me a push in the right direction?
I am trying to further my research into the life of Mary Ann White nee Swader ( or maybe Schwader?) born abt 1819 in Prussia. In the 1871 census her place of birth appears to be "Kingulumstere" Prussia, although I am quite willing to believe that my interpretation of the handwriting is incorrect!

On the 1851 census Mary Ann is shown as a brickyard worker living with 3 children the eldest of whom, John, was born in Poland in abt 1840. Her second child, Sarah Ann, who is my ancestor, was born in 1845 in Strood Kent. I am in possesion of Sarah's birth certificate which gives her father as Job White (d. 1849 Poplar) but I have been unable to trace Job and Mary Ann's marriage certificate.

I would very much like to be able to find out:

1) If Job and Mary came to England together
2) When and from where exactly Mary came
3) If not Prussia or Poland then where was Job born?
4) The reason for migration to England at this time - religious, economic?

Any help or pointers that anyone may be able to provide would be very welcome.

Thank you
