I wonder if anyone can help.
I have been looking for prison records for a james Tindale in her majesty's prison Gateshead in the 1880's.i have the census info but wondered if anyone knows more than i have found about locating the records.

They're probably at TNA, at Kew.

Here's their guidance leaflet on criminal records:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/rdleaflet.asp?sLeafletID=253. As you will see, there are lots of potential records relating to your man.

HO 140 & PCOM 2 look most likely

Note that there's not an online index to individual prisoner, someone (you or a researcher) has to search through the original records
