James Devene (later Devine) came to Australia about 1860. His marriage certificate states he came from Glasgow and his father was William. His surname was gradually changed to Devine on documents in New South Wales. I have also seen his name spelt devean. I have seen examples of his handwriting and he seems to have been literate, so I am not sure what was the most likely spelling in Glasgow back then. Anyone help?

In those days often all that they could do was to write their name, but that did not mean that they could read. The two skills, reading and writing, were taught as two subjects and it was much more costly to teach writing. Sometimes it was only one child in the family taught.

Names were spelt however they sounded to the person writing it down.
