Hi

Can anyone help please.

I have a John Spedding, b. c1743, whose 2nd marriage was to Mary Lamonby on 4th May 1773 Wigton Parish Church. John Spedding became an Innkeeper in Wigton following this marriage and had 4 known children between 1774 and 1781 from this 2nd marriage (1st marriage, also in Wigton, to Catherine White in 1765).

Prior to becoming an Innkeeper, John Spedding was a Yeoman/Farm worker at Bracken Hill, Castle Sowerby.

Any ideas on how to find out which Inn he ran in Wigton? The records for granting licences to Victuallers for that period don't exist at Carlisle RO.

Thanks Bobbie

I don't think there was pub licensing before about 1830.

Perhaps there is a book on this page that you could order at your local library

There's a link to the Cumbria FHS which you could try too.
