Has anyone researched the family history of Harold?
I have a Edith Mabel Tuson who married Arthur C Holt in Sydney on 10/04/1901 - Arthur is 'supposedly' related to Harold.

I have checked various web sites and found that Harold's parents were Thomas and Olive Williams (one site states they were immigrants, another claims they were born in NSW ?)
Harold was born 5/08/1908

I cannot find Arthur's parents - so cannot prove the link to Harold

Arthur & Edith had two children. Phyllis Violet and Colin George.

Any help most appreciated
David

Hi

The NSW bdm index is online and free.

There is a marriage listed for Thomas Holt and Olive Williams for 1908.
2287/1908 HOLT THOMAS J WILLIAMS OLIVE M NEWTOWN

TDleft>2287/1908 HOLT THOMAS J WILLIAMS OLIVE M NEWTOWN

There are a number of Thomas Holt's born in NSW so very hard without knowing his age or knowing his parents.

The address is http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/search.htm

Perhaps a Who's who of Australia would have more details. Also As Harold Holt was the one who took the swim and disappeared I would expect to find multiple books written which should have more details.

A page on him states this:

Paternal grandfather migrated from southern England to Australia in the nineteenth century. He began the History[/b]Born 5 August 1908 at Sydney, New South Wales. Thanks Helen
I have tried the sites that you mentioned and get find heaps of material for Harold as you stated. You have clarified one point for me - it was Harold's grandfather that was the immigrant not his father - thanks. I wonder if Arthur C Holt was Thomas's brother? (That is , of course if the 'supposition' in my original posting is correct.

Hi,

A good book on Holt is: The Life and Death of Harold Holt (Tom Frame, 2005, ISBN 1 74114 672 0)

From that info and the NSW BDM, it indicates that a family tree is as follows:

JAMES HOLT = MARY ANN (surname unknown)
i. Henry (1826 - 1903) = 26 JAN 1858 = Ann Lemon
1. Thomas J (1858) = 1882 = Mary A.E. Worner
I. Liela A.R (1884)
II. Thomas James (1886) = Olive May Pearce
a. Harold Edward (5/8/1908)
b. Clifford Thomas
III. Gotlieb H (1888)
IV. Harry L (1898)
V. Vera H (1902)
VI. Robert C (1905)
2. William (1860)
3. Sarah J (1863)
4. Mary A (1865)
5. Emily (1867)
6. Sophia (1869)
7. Elizabeth (1871)
8. Henrietta (1874)
9. Henry (1874)
10. Henry J (1876)
11. John J (1878)
12. Charles (1880)

I'll do a more in-depth search on Harold's cousins etc later, but hopefully this gives you a start.

Sorry, doesn't seem like the spacing has come out but hopefully the index (1, I, i etc) will make things easier.

Between 1800 and 1900, there were only 5 Arthur Holt's born in NSW. Their details are as follows:

1880 HOLT ARTHUR EDWIN JOSEPH ELIZABETH LITHGOW
1887 HOLT ARTHUR J HENRY J LUCY GRAFTON
1879 HOLT WILLIAM ARTHUR CHRISTOPHER MARY GOULBURN
1891 HOLT ARTHUR O WILLIAM E EMMA RICHMOND
1892 HOLT ARTHUR J ISAAC A KATE NEWCASTLE

Further, there are no Arthur Holt's listed as assisted immigrants to NSW from 1880-1896.

To Melissa - a HUGE thank you for all the information - I will spend the next day or so wading through it. Arthur's middle name was Christian so I've now got his date of death.

To Christine - no I haven't got the marriage certificate which would have given some very useful clues

No problem David. Glad to help. If the Arthur Christian Holt who died in 1942 is the one you've been looking for, then I don't think he's related to Harold Holt (although they could theoretically be distant cousins). Arthur Christian Holt's parents were Sidney Bernard & Annie. I haven't come across those names in my research of Harold Holt's family.
