Born in 1885. Was married twice but I am trying to find the name of his first wife.
They had approx 6 children and one of which - Sarah Elizabeth Meaker was my grandmother

Settled i believe in Merthyr and the second wife's surname was Dimante.

Any assistance would be gratefully appreciated.

Thank you

Born in 1881. Was married twice but I am trying to find the name of his first wife...I thought maybe Robert may have been married by the 1901 census and that might give you the name of his first wife, however, the only Robert MEAKER/MAKER I can spot on the 1891 and 1901 censuses was born about 1885...

He's Robert [MEAKER], son of Mary BUFTON and stepson of William BUFTON. There are other children in the family: William, Eliza Selina, Alice, Joseph Henry and Robert MEAKER and Mabel BUFTON. They live in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. [Reference RG12/4436 Folio 76 Page 29]

In 1901, the same Robert is 16, still living at home with mother and step-father and brother Joseph. He is a "Coal hewer below ground". [Reference RG13/5024 Folio 168 Page 18]

Does this look like your Robert?

FreeBMD has a marriage record for a Robert MEAKER in the June quarter of 1903 in Merthyr Tydfil. Possible brides include Margaret JONES and Mary Jane WILLIAMS. [Reference: Volume 11a Page 1131] Do you have this?

Thanks - this looks to be him.

I don't have this - being a newbie, I am trying to find any sites that may be available where you don't have to pay to view - are there any?

Thanks

ThanksThere are many excellent sites -- thanks to generous souls who volunteer their time transcribing records. A few that come to mind for Britain:

-- Genuki: http://www.genuki.org.uk/ -- lots of useful information
-- FreeBMD: www.freebmd.org.uk/ (http://www.freebmd.org.uk/) -- the Civil Registration index of births, marriages and deaths for the period 1837-1983.
-- UKBMD: http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/ -- as above.
-- FreeCen: http://www.freecen.org.uk/
-- IGI: http://www.familysearch.org/ -- allows you to do searches for earlier records as well: Home Page > Search > International Genealogical Index [IGI].
-- Hugh Wallis's Site: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/ -- a great accessory to the IGI, allows you to do middle name searches.
-- Historical Directories: http://www.historicaldirectories.org/ -- a digital library of local and trade directories for England and Wales, from 1750 to 1919.

I'm sure you'll find more just by reading through the messages in the "Genealogy Beginners" forum. Also, there are likely to be lots of good sites specific to the areas you're looking in -- try Googling for them.

Good luck!

I had a look through the GRO Index for any MEAKER birth registrations in Merthyr for the period 1903-13 and came up with the following - do any ring a bell:

Charles Cornelius Sep qtr 1903 vol 11a page 775
Edmund John Mar qtr 1904 vol 11a page 810
Charles Jun qtr 1904 vol 11a page 780
Charles Henry Jun qtr 1905 vol 11a page 757
Florence Sarah Dec qtr 1905 vol 11a page 711
David Grant Mar qtr 1908 vol 11a page 839
Arthur Morgan Jun qtr 1909 vol 11a page 865
Stanley Jun qtr 1910 vol 11a page 886?
Eva R? Dec qtr 1910 vol 11a page 760?
Rupert Mar qtr 1911 vol 11a page 791?
Lucy Sep qtr 1912 vol 11a page 1629 Mothers maiden
name WILLIAMS
Doris M Dec qtr 1912 vol 11a page 1551 Mothers maiden
name HOSKINGS

Could Florence Sarah be your grandmother??? The entries with the question marks against them are because the typewritten entries on the GRO were very smudged and difficult to read. Hope this helps.

I've now asked the Register office in Maidenhead, Berkshire to provide a copy of the death certificate for Sarah Elizabeth Smart nee Meaker, as I have now found she died in St. Lukes Hospital in Maidenhead town centre around 1968 -does anyone know whether I can look for this information myself?

Thanks :)
