I am looking for information on my great-grandfather who lived in Somerset but exactly where I don't know, and his first wife Sarah or just on the Meaker family. I do not have a lot of information at the moment as he moved to South Wales at some point and I have to meet up with my great aunt (his daughter).

Grasping at straws - any information would help.

thanks

There is this Robert MEAKER in the 1891/1901 census records at Merthyr Tydfil with a Somerset connection as his mother was born there. Any use??

1891 census of Merthyr - RG12/4436, folio 78, page 29
Schedule 160, 7 Ponty fund?

William BUFTON Head M 48 General Labourer Nantwich Radnor
Mary do Wife M 42 South Brant Somerset
William MEAKER Step Son S 19 General do Barham do
Eliza Selina do do Dau S 16 At Home Dowlais Glam
Alice do do Dau 11 Scholar Merthyr Tidfil do
Joseph Hry do do Son 8 do do do
Robert do do Son 6 do do do
Tydfil BUFTON Dau 2 weeks do do

In the 1901 census (RG13/5024, folio 168, page 18) Robert is still at the same address (7 Pontyffan) with brother Joseph H and mother Mary and stepfather William.

In the 1881 census of Merthyr (RG11/5312, folio 10, page 17) Mary is still married to a Uriah MEAKER - you can view this record yourself on the IGI Family Search site.

There is a marriage in the December quarter of 1888 in Merthyr reg district vol 11a, page 907 of a Mary MEAKER and a William BUFTON. Hope this helps.

Janet.

Sorry, forgot to mention that in the 1881 census Uriah and Mary are transcribed as MAKER.

Hi Janet

Thanks - this Robert is my grandfather, and I've found Uriah died in 1885.

To take you back another generation, here is Uriah with his parents in the 1861 census:

RG9/1627, folio 19, page 12
Schedule 83, Chilton Hill, Chilton, Somerset

William MEAKER Head Mar 55 Ag Labourer ? holder Middlesex
Celina do Wife Mar 55 Stowell Somerset
Uria do Son Un 15 do do
Robert do Son 9 do do

In the 1851 census (HO107/1925, folio 564, page 2) William and Selenea are enumerated as MAKER and are in Stowell, Somerset with children Caroline, Russell, Esabella, Ann and Uriah. William's place of birth is given as Stowell and Selenea's as Chapel Alerton, Somerset.

There is a marriage on FreeBMD (http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/) in the March quarter 1868 registered in Axbridge reg district of a Uriah MEAKER and a Mary HUNT vol 5c, page 840.

Following on from that marriage, here is what looks like Mary and her parents in the 1861 census of South Brent, Somerset:

RG9/1670, folio 94, page 20
Schedule 84, Wick Lane

Joseph HUNT Head Mar 41 Ag Labr Somerset Bawdrip
Eliza do Wife Mar 34 do East Brent
Mary do Dau 12 do South Brent
William do Son 8 do do
John do Son 5 do do
Elizabeth do Dau 3 do do
George T do Son 8 mo do do

Hopefully, with the websites Trish has provided for you, you should be able to follow back the ancestors shown above. If you do want to order any certificates online you can do so at www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/. Good luck.

Janet.
