David, I took a look at the 1901 census image you reference. I think a couple of the transcribed names may be a little wrong. See my interpretations in blue in your message:

Samuel Millward & Florence Mary Millward in 1901 Census RG13/4680 136 17 at 84 Weardale Street, Tudhoe

Samuel born c 1858 Tudhoe, Durham Foreman Rollturner
Florence Mary born c 1857 Rowley Regis, Staffs
Children
Muriel Florence dau born c1893 Tudhoe, Durham
Ella Gwendolen dau born c 1895 '' ''
Harold Chas [for Charles] son born c1898 '' ''
Eileen B M dau born c1901 '' ''
Ethel Mary Charles visitor born c 1881 Monmouth, Wales

Was Florence Mary related to the visitor?Perhaps they are sisters... Here's an Ethel CHARLES in 1891 who matches your visitor in the 1891 census:

1891 Census: RG12/1071 Folio 82 Page 41
Address: 29 ?Lealand? Rd, Tottenham, Middlesex

Perhaps they are sisters... Scratch that thought -- the ages are not probable for sisters. Maybe Ethel was Florence's niece...

FYI,

In 1881, Ethel and mother, Elizabeth, and sister Florence, along with a servant, are living in Wales while father John appears to be in Worcestershire. Elizabeth is a "Chemists Wife". Birthplace for mother and daughters is legible on this image and reads as Ebbw Vale.

John, living alone in Cradley, Worcestershire is a "Chemist + Druggist"

In 1871, John CHARLES is living with his parents in Durham -- no siblings around:

1871 Census: RG10/4931 Folio 33 Page 25
Address: Village of Merringtonl Lane, Durham

Robert CHARLES Head Mar 48 Stocktaker In Iron Works [born] Lincolnshire Goberton
Harriet do Wife Mar 49 do Deeping
John J. do Son Un 18 ?Chesswells?* apprentice Middlesex Kensington [or Kennington]

* Maybe "Chemists Apprentice"?

But, aha! the 1861 census is quite interesting -- and full of information:

1861 Census: RG9/2039 Folio 105 Page 22
Address: Surfeit Hill, Rowley Regis, Staffordshire

John CHARLES Head Mar 64 Clerk in Iron Works [born] Gosberton [or Garberton] Lincoln
Ann CHARLES Wife Mar 69 ?Tydd St Mary? Lincoln
Robert CHARLES Son Mar 37 Clerk in Iron Works Gos[ar]berton Lincoln
Harriet CHARLES daur in law Mar 39 Deeping St. Nichols Lincoln
Chas SMITH grandson 19 Scholar Garberton Lincoln
John J CHARLES do 8 Scholar Middlesex St. Mary Kensington
Florence M CHARLES grandaught 4 Scholar Staffordshire Rowley

So it would appear that Ethel CHARLES is indeed Florence MILLWARD's niece.

Trish

Thanks for all the effort Trish but I think the 1861 Census is the clincher! Date, place and name-wise!

This gives me Samuel Millward marrying Florence Mary Charles some time around 1890 in Sunderland - I can look at that now.

They had a child Harold 'Charles' Millward!!

Two questions!

1 How do you get colour in text?

2 How on earth do you get all that census info so quickly?? And do you have 1841?

And -- finally -- in 1881, Florence M. CHARLES is a governess and a visitor at the household of Septimus L. WILLIAMS, a 36-year-old builder in Harmmersmith, London.

Also in the household is another WILLIAMS brother, Elizabeth ROBINSON and Isabella DUNN, a servant.

You are most welcome, David.

To answer your questions...

1 How do you get colour in text? The default colour for typing messages is black but it's easy to change this at any time.

You should see a tool box above or beside the window in which you are typing your message. In the tool box is an "A" with a down arrow immediately to the right.
-- Highlight the text you wish to "colour".
-- Click on the down arrow beside the "A" and a palette of colours should appear.
-- Click on the colour you want and your highlighted text should change to the new colour.

2 How on earth do you get all that census info so quickly?? And do you have 1841?I have an online subscription to census info from 1851 through to 1901. Unfortunately, I don't have 1841.

If you'd like help finding your family in 1841, I'd advise you to post another query to the forum. Be as specific as possible in what you need and what you already have [e.g., that you have 1851 and up]. It may help if you include "1841 lookup" in the title of your message.

It's definitely worth looking up the CHARLES family in 1841, at least to check out the potential relationship between Robert and Harriet CHARLES and Elizabeth HOWETT.

Good luck with your research,
Trish
