My 5x great grandfather was John How bc 1735 in Sawbridgeworth.
He married an Ann Rumball also of Sawbridgeworth. One of their sons, James, moved to Walthamstow in Essex. If anyone has any information about any of these families (including the other children of John and Ann) I would be very interested.
Thanks

Hi Jenny,

The BIVR includes the marriage of John How and Ann Rumbal as 20 October 1760 at Sawbridgeworth.

You may be aware of what the IGI reports, but here it is anyway. However, I would not trust the IGI implicitly.

The following were all christened in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, children of John and Ann How (though not necessarily yours):

John 06/08/1761
William 10/07/1763
Mary christened 20/10/1765
James christened 17/03/1769
Thomas 16/06/1771
Ann 25/09/1774
Richard christened 14/09/1777
Elizabeth 13/04/1781

Sorry if I sound a bit pessimistic, but while I'll take leaps of faith with my family, it's quite another to do that with someone else's family :)

HTH,

Sharron

I was interested to see the reference to Rumball. I have an old sampler, undated, made by Ann Smith Rumball, who I understand was a distant relative. My gt gt grandmother was Emma Amy Smith who came from Parndon, not far from Sawbridgeworth. I have not be able to locate Ann Smith Rumball anywhere and wonder if there is any connection.

Thanks for the replies. I will certainly check out the information provided.
Puzzled - I don't know if there is any connection between your Ann Smith Rumball and my Ann Rumball. It sounds very interesting though. I will pass the information on to my sister who has more knowledge of the Rumball family than I do. Will let you know of any developments.
Regards
Jenny

Have only just seen yr messages regarding the Rumball family in Sawbridgeworth and have come accross the following marriage certificate:- 04/06/1883 James Turner (Widower) aged 75(!) married Sarah Brace (Widow) aged 59 - her fathers name William Rumball. Don't know if this info is of any use to anyone? James Turner was my gt x 3 grandfather.
