    Default READER of Isleham

Is anyone researching the Reader family of Isleham? I have Francis Alfred Reader born 1845 at Isleham, according to the 1881 census. He moved to Beverley in Yorkshire, marrying Harriett in 1873. I would like to know who his parents were.

    Hi Susan
I have found a birth for Francis Alfred Reader Dec quarter 1846 district

I didn't find him on the 1871 census but I did find another Francis Reader:
Francis Reader H W 81 born Isleham Paris Relief
    residence Fordham, Newmarket RG10 1600/35/25

The birth cert will give you both his parents names and mothers maiden name

Thanks for the info. Annie. I think he must be at Beverley by 1871, he'd probably show up on the 1851 census. I have to admit I'm trying to do this on the cheap (red face, looks shifty!) as this is a friend's family and I won't get paid for it!
Thanks again for taking the trouble to look up and reply.
    Susan.

    Default Francis A Reader

There were two Francis A Reader births recorded in Cambridgshire archives, in 1842 and 1846. Thus, the one found in 1851 census is probably the elder one, and not the one who moved to Yorkshire. Around that time, many families seem to have had several children baptised together, and the Readers fell into this category. In the Isleham parish register, the following baptisms all occur on 20 Oct 1850.

Hannah d of David & Ann
John s of David & Ann
Susan d of David & Ann
Francis s of Jonathan & Rebekah
Mary d of Jonathan & Rebeckah,

which doesn't help much except that one of the two Francis Reader's parents are known

Many thanks Geoff for the information. I've found a Francis Reader's death on FreeBMD, aged 32, registered at Sheffield in 1871 which could possibly be John and Mary's son. He can't be my Francis, who was alive in 1881. I think my best bet, as Annie says, has got to be his marriage certificate, or get SKS to look up the 1871 census in Sheffield as it seems to me that his parents left Isleham before 1851.

    Regards, Sue.

P.S. I would find a <confused> Smilie very useful on these boards!!

Thank you again Annie. Yes, Islans could be mis-transcribed for Isleham, it's certainly worth following up, as is your 2nd. post. That Francis was the right age.

You and Geoff are so kind, hope I can help you sometime and return the favour.
