    Default John Weir McKechnie

    hi everyone.
    hope all is well.

struggling to find the marriage of John Weir McEechnie and Jane/Jean Gellatly.
I have tried findmypast, ancestry, scotlsndspeople.

    tried different spellings of Gellatly.

Jane ?c. 1826 Rattray Scotland butthe cloest I could find is Jean Gellatly born1/10/1826 Aluyth Scotland. father Peter, mother Elizabeth Lawson.

children born in scotland (couldnt verify them either).
    John born 1854; James Parker born 1856;
then immigrated to Australia in 1858.

Now some people on ancestry have John jnr being born 1854 New Orleans, but why go to US in 1854 then back to Scotland to get the boat to Australia in 1858. seems strange.
    hoping someone can help.

The pre-registration entries in Family Search depend on the entries being in a Church Register. Not only have many volumes not survived, but when they have, it was up to the Minister to choose how much detail he entered.

Be careful with Ancestry trees unless they give their sources (or you know them)

I've looked at Scotlands People and nothing on there that I can see. Will have a look on Trove later to see if any mention of them on there. Have you seen the entries on Find A Grave?

This is interesting. Looking for a John McKechnie in New Orleans on Family search, there is a death recorded in Sep 1854 of Mary Jane McKechnie age 2 . Parents John Weir McKechnie and Jane Gallay. Mary Jane noted as being daughter of a legitimate marriage on original image.
J W Mckechnie is also mentioned in a business directory of 1855 residing Greatmen.
So son John may well have been born in New Orleans

Mary Jane was born 1852 (died 1854) in New Orleans. John Weir was born 1854 in New Orleans. Then James Parker was born in 1856 in Scotland. Margaret born 1865 in Victoria Australia. Wondered if Jane was married previously so maiden name different.

thankyou. have added the New Orleans info into my database.
will look at findagrave. with regard to maiden name. on the Vic bdm it only states fathers name for Jane as Gellately. no christian name nor mothers name.
so maybe the one I found with Jane being Jean could be her parents. which would coincide with the town rattray mentioned.
still continue to find marriage hopefully. maybe getting a copy of the birth of John or Mary Jane might give marriage info. will try anyway
    once again
    thank you

Where does the info for Janes birth being in Rattray come from? There is an 1841 census entry for a Jane Gellatly in Northumberland age 15yrs. Father George age 40 born Scotland, Mother Mary age 40 b Northumberland, siblings James 12yrs, George 9yrs, Mary 6yrs, Margaret 3yrs all born Northumberland (including Jane).
