    Default Rev. Nicholas Pennington 1679-1735

    Hi Folks,

I have this entry on Nicholas Pennington but am having a bit of trouble deciphering it. The entry is The Oxford University Alumni 1500-1886:
    https://www.ancestry.com.au/imagevie...279?pId=173432

It says that Nicholas was the son of Robert from Anderton County, Lancaster, pleb.

What is a pleb.? And is Robert a pleb. of St. Alban Hall or is it referring to Nicholas? because then it goes on to mention he matriculated on 22 Nov 1695, then his BA, then his MA in 1702-3, and rector of Withyham, Sussex in 1704, and Ashurst, Kent in 1717.

Not much use of semi-colons so it left me scratching my head.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

pleb is short for plebeian, indicating that his father was a commoner, or someone of little consequence / standing.

St Alban Hall (Oxford) relates to Nicholas.

Aaah, that makes sense. Thank you. Nicholas went on to earn quite a living as a rector (as did his son and grand son).

Have you seen him in the Clergy Database?

Thank you for the reference to the Clergy Database. It has proved extremely useful as there were three generations of clergy in the family.
