I sent the photographs to a militaria expert in the UK. His spot on reply is below:
"I have looked at the photos and I think he was in the St.John Ambulance, the badge certainly looks like that and I think the Welsh Division of this also wore Prince of Wales Plumes as a secondary badge. The dark uniform certainly looks to be St.John’s and they did wear khaki for war service."
I checked the Internet and found photographs that show he is correct.

St Johns uniform would explain why the first photo didn't shout 'army uniform' at me.
