    Hi Ken

I may explore your suggestion later this week and 'Thank You' for taking time out to look at the 1871c for me.

I did have the thought that maybe Jane married, so looked at FreeBMD marriages from 1868 on. Then noted each potential male surname and searched Ancestry for a Jane with that surname. I got nowhere here either, in the sense they didn't fit my Jane's profile!

I wonder if she went by a different Christian name sometimes? As with her baptism, her birth certificate only gives 'Jane' as a forename. Or of course she could be mistranscribed!

    No worries, I'll keep perusing.

    Hi

Thursday saw me receiving the birth certificate of Elizabeth. Well pleased with the GRO, got it a whole week sooner than their expected posting date!

Matches the christening and can confirm actual birthdate is 11 June 1868. No new names as mother, Jane, registered her.

Ken - I tried your suggestion re LancsOPC - no more children came up with mother Jane Darbyshire/Derbyshire. And I've had another fruitless search for Jane & Elizabeth on the 1871 census.

Now wondering if she was 'living with' someone and going under their name. Moving on for now to researching back from Jane's parents to grandparents instead!

    Thanks for the help/suggestions given.

    Cheers

    Sue

Sue. My suggestion was for LancsBMD. Lancashire is well served by many resources and it is easy to get confused.

What you should have found is Surname>Forename>Sub-District>Register At>Mother's Maiden Name providing a tabulated output something like this:-

DARBYSHIRE John Pemberton Wigan & Leigh DARBYSHIRE PEM/24/152
DARBYSHIRE Margaret Pemberton Wigan & Leigh DARBYSHIRE PEM/23/423
DARBYSHIRE Peter Pemberton Wigan & Leigh DARBYSHIRE PEM/24/259
DARBYSHIRE Richard Upholland Wigan & Leigh DARBYSHIRE UPHL/16/213
DERBYSHIRE Martha Ann Hindley Wigan & Leigh DERBYSHAIRE HNDL/36/454
Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1868
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
DARBYSHIRE Charlotte Wigan Wigan & Leigh DARBYSHIRE WIG/89/185
DARBYSHIRE Elizabeth Pemberton Wigan & Leigh DARBYSHIRE PEM/25/100
DARBYSHIRE Ellen Upholland Wigan & Leigh DARBYSHIRE UPHL/17/119
DARBYSHIRE Mary Jane Pemberton Wigan & Leigh DARBYSHIRE PEM/25/321
DARBYSHIRE Peter Hindley Wigan & Leigh DARBYSHIRE HNDL/37/412
DERBYSHIRE John Wigan Wigan & Leigh DERBYSHIRE WIG/87/399

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1869
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
DARBYSHIRE Ann Pemberton Wigan & Leigh DARBYSHIRE PEM/26/118
DARBYSHIRE George Hindley Wigan & Leigh DARBYSHIRE HNDL/40/270
DARBYSHIRE George Pemberton Wigan & Leigh DARBYSHIRE PEM/26/347
DARBYSHIRE William Henry Pemberton Wigan & Leigh DARBYSHIRE PEM/25/455
DERBYSHIRE Mary Elizabeth Wigan Wigan & Leigh DERBYSHIRE WIG/91/444

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1870
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
DARBYSHIRE Isaiah Westleigh Wigan & Leigh DARBYSHIRE WL/18/248
DARBYSHIRE Margaret Pemberton Wigan & Leigh DARBYSHIRE PEM/27/140
Mary Jane in 1868 is most unlikely, but some of the others might be worth eliminating.

    Hi Ken

Lack of concentration I'm going to blame for that error!

Thanks for the listing, just a 'few' names for one to pursue then! I started to look at Jane's brothers and sisters a bit more to see if I could glean anything from them but have not found any clues as to where Jane is re 1871 census and onwards. Might look to see if she went abroad..

Just a tad frustrated, but will move on. If only I could be a time traveller!

    Cheers, Sue
