    Default Help identifying a uniform

Hi! I"m at a bit of a loss as to how to find his records and I was hoping that someone might be able to help identify the uniform being worn in the photo below or give some clue as to his service. This fine upstanding gentleman is my great-grandfather John Joseph Hayes born 1894 in Carlow, Ireland. We know he served in Egypt during WWI and possibly in India as well at some point. The cap badge seems to be an artillery badge but I'm not sure. Thanks for any help you can give!

definitely Artillery....Royal field/Horse or Garrison. It doesn't look like his service record survives,,,and there are at least 5 J J Hayes with medal cards in the Artillery.....not to mention hundreds with just the initial J.

Peter forgot to state the source which is presumably the Royal Artillery enlistment books available online at Findmypast.

The significance of the discharge date of 1924 is that you will not find his service record online because they have not yet been released by the Ministry of Defence.

However you can apply to them for a copy:
