Default DAWSON of Great Bardfield, Essex

Just putting this on the Essex forum for anyone else out there who may be related.

Elizabeth Wilsmer (my direct ancestor) of Joseph & Mary DAWSON {nee FRENCH} baptised 1780 Sep 17th at St. Mary the Virgin, Great Bardfield {married Abraham OWERS 1898} (D/P 67/1/2 image 28)

Other children of Joseph & Mary DAWSON nee FRENCH:

William s. Jos & Mary DAWSON bapt. 1775 Sep 17th at St. Mary the Virgin, Great Bardfield (D/P 67/1/2 image 25)
Mary of Jos & Mary DAWSON bapt. 1783 February 9th at St. Mary the Virgin, Great Bardfield (D/P 67/1/2 image 29)
Daniel s. Joseph & Mary DAWSON bapt. 1785 May 1st at St. Mary the Virgin, Great Bardfield (Parish) (D/P 67/1/2 image 30)
Sophia of Joseph & Mary DAWSON baptism 1787 September 16th at St. Mary the Virgin, Great Bardfield (D/P 67/1/2 image 31)
Maria of Joseph & Mary DAWSON baptism 1791 March 6th at St. Mary the Virgin, Great Bardfield (D/P 67/1/2 image 33)

At St. Mary the Virgin, Great Bardfield 1772 February 4th Joseph DAWSON, miller, single man of this parish, and Mary FRENCH, single woman of this parish, were married by banns in this church the fourth day of February in the year of our lord 1772. This marriage was solemnized between Joseph DAWSON (signature) and Mary French (mark) witnessed by William DAWSON (mark) {n.b. The date of the marriage would suggest that there may have been a child born prior to William in 1775, and possibly another between 1775 and 1780} (D/P 67/1/4 image 30-31)

At St. Mary the Virgin, Great Bardfield 1749 March 18th Joseph of John & Judith DAWSEN baptised (D/P 67/1/2 image 12)

It is likely that Joseph had siblings born between 1738 and 1758, however the baptism register is not very legible.

At St. Mary the Virgin, Great Bardfield 1738 April 23rd John? DARSON & Judith GROUT married (D/P 67/1/2 image 52)
    And 1736/7 February 17th? James DARSEN & Eliz NEWAY married (D/P 67/1/2 image 52)

It is therefore possible that the other DARSON/DAWSONS having children baptised at Great Bardfield in the 1770s i.e. James & Rebecca DAWSON and Samuel & Eliza/Mary DAWSON could be siblings or cousins of Joseph DAWSON.

n.b Burials at St. Mary the Virgin, Great Bardfield only searched 1762-1783, do not give ages and usually no relationships

    1762 February 18th James DAWSON buried (D/P 67/1/2 image 43)
1771 March 8th Judith DAWSON buried
    1773 March 12th Rebecca DAWSON buried (D/P 67/1/2 image 47)
1780? March 26th Wendon? DAWSON of James & Rebecca DAWSON buried in woollen (D/P 67/1/2 image 49)
    1780? May 3rd John DAWSON buried in woollen (D/P 67/1/2 image 49)
    1782 February 14th John DAWSON buried in woollen (D/P 67/1/2 image 49)
    1783 Rebecca DAWSON buried (D/P 67/1/2 image 50)

I still have quite a bit more searching to do, and need to go back over the barely legible registers as I probably missed out large chunks at the time.

    Wilkes_ml - I think we are related!
I believe I am descended from John Dawson & Judith Grout's daughter Jane and her (illegitimate) son Samuel
I've yet to find and confirm through records that connection for myself but I've made contact with a 7th cousin who is descended from another of John & Judith's children, James, b.c.1741

I did wonder if Samual's wife was Elizabeth Mary, as it was quite common for people with middle names to interchange them as and when they wanted to!

Also the fact that there was only 14 months between the baptism of Millicent? daughter of Samuel & Eliza in 1786, and John son of Samuel & Mary in 1787 would suggest Eliza and Mary were the same...though not impossible to marry straight after being widowed, especially if Eliza(beth) died in childbirth. However, I could not see Eliza(beth) buried at Great Bardfield between 1786 and 1787 (the National Burial Index covers Great Bardfield). There were a few Marys buried at Great Bardfield between 1795 and 1836....the later being born 1750, from the National burial Index, so I haven't checked the originals to see if relationships are stated.

I would assume that maybe Ann WORLES was from another parish, hence banns being read, but no marriage. However normally the banns would also mention the parish that the parties were residing at, but it wasn't unknown for details to be ommited.

Have you checked Finchingfield marriage/baptism registers for the time period of 1785-1795 just to check there wasn't another Samuel Dawson to be on the safe side?

I also have Dawson entries from other parishes including Fairstead, Black Notley, Rayne, Great Baddow, Kelvedon, Terling & Rivenhall, but have just made note of these whilst searching other family names and as I wasn't searching for DAWSONS at the time, I didn't go back to check missing years etc.

I haven't seen a baptism for Samuel yet, but will keep a look out for him, when I go back through the registers ( it's often worth looking through a second time, as I always tend to notice entries I missed the first time).
