Unfortunately, dropping Bristol Charlotte puts me back to square one with William Pearce. I had previously assumed that he had died sometime between 1846
The fun of family history, that missing piece of the jigsaw!

William L would have been approx 25 at the time of the signing, would he have had sufficient standing in the community etc to be worthy of such an act? Maybe he would have signed & included the L to distinguish himself from his father?

As an employee in Her Majesty's pay ( Queen Victory would have been on the throne) I suspect such actions would have been in conflict to the employ

Just a bit concerned that yo have him oon the Britannia on the 1861 census....this record indicates the person named was born Southsea Hants( I think is the county, down south, ) whereas I would have expected to see Jamaica or overseas ......will review later

    Geneius,

You are right. The fun is pursuing (and discovering) the missing pieces. I had not found William on the 1861 census but pulled the info from a text. Thinking about your discovery, my original assumption re; William Leopold is not supported by the later info either. I took a look at a document that I sourced from the Nat. Archives listing him as William Leopold Pearce (of Jamaica) at a rank of D2C. I am not that familiar with Royal Navy ratings, but I don't believe he was an officer (which I believe he would have been had he served on the training ship HMS Britannia). I'll keep digging. Thanks again for your help.
