Does anyone know if, after being KIA, a soldier's personal effects were sent home ?
My research relates to a Lieutenant in the British army. Letters from his commanding officer explains he died instantly when a shell exploded above the trench he was in, he goes on to explain that he was buried nearby and a marker erected.
Some, recently discovered, family photographs were thought to have been returned to his parents and/or siblings. However, the photos are likely postwar and not the photos to which he referred to in a letter home.
Letters sent to him are not in the recent find, but a letter he sent to his sister is. The contents of the letter relate to his sisters intended husband and photos.
All genealogists and historians are aware that family legend can often be flawed. What we are trying to do in this research is examine the evidence in order to provide a "best guess" scenario.
Thanks
