Default Copies of a war diary - expensive!

    Hi

I just had a quote for a copy of a war diary and it was nearly £300!

I am very new to this, if I go to the National Archives myself will I be able to copy them myself for less money?

    I welcome any advice

    Ian

Did you specify paper copies (cheapest)?

if I go to the National Archives myself will I be able to copy them myself for less money?
Yes. Free using your digital camera. (Don't know why I used that phrase. Non-digital cameras are pretty rare nowadays )

    HI Ian

If you cant go there yourself there are a couple of chaps on WW2Talk who do them for about 10 pence a page.
Quite a bit cheaper than NA prices!
As Peter has said, the cheapest is to go yourself, but you do need to organise things first go get the diaries ready.

    regards

If you've got a ticket you can order in advance. Check availability before travelling because some may be unavailable during digitization.

Was this quote for a diary that wasn't already digitised and available on line?

I've had 2 war diaries for the 7th DLI that I downloaded from the NA site for £3.50 each.
These were pdf docs, 39 and 43 pages and about 11 and 12 mb each.

    Worth double checking availability.

    cheers, MTS

    HI

I presumed we were talking about WW2 dairies (as this is the WW2 section) as WW1 diaries are progressively being put online for 3.50 as noted above. Is that not right?

    regards

    Robert

D'oh - didn't spot that! But my comments still stand, just in the wrong place!

    Hi

    Thank you for your reply.
I was talking about WW2 diaries.
I have downloaded WW1 diaries previously and as you point out they are pretty cheap.

I understand now that the WW2 have yet to be digitised. So I am finding ways around it.

    Thanks
