Default Royal Garrison Artillery - 467 Seige Battery

I am new to this forum and I am interested in my grandads part in WW1. I know his early army history and that he served in Malta for five years. From 30 July 1917 to 12 July 1918 he served in France as a gunner (Regiment No. 169036) with RGA 467 Siege Battery. He was wounded on 19 June 1918. Honorably discharged (gunshot wound) in 1919. Any information about the 467 Seige Battery during this period would be much appreciated.

Can you provide some identity details for the man please? Is it Walter Marchant of Burley, HAM? I'm having a bit of trouble reconciling the question with the records that I can see.

Hello Peter, Yes it is Walter from Burley. 1893-1953. I have another number which is 35194 (corporal). The info on 467 is from the the medal and awards extract. Thanks Dennis.

The Silver War Badge roll shows 35194 Cpl Walter Marchant discharged from 264 Siege Battery.

The Victory/British War Medal roll shows the same man under 401 Siege Battery (how column 4 was used often seems inconsistent)

What appears to be the corresponding Medal Index Card shows 264 Siege Battery.

I know I'm only skimming the records but are you sure 160936 (medal roll page 10040) isn't someone else?

Peter, I have had a look through the info that I have and believe now that the 467 record could well be someone with the same name. Do you know where the 264 were when he was wounded on 19 June 1918.

There's a partial diary of 264 Siege Battery in WO95/544. I suspect you may want to examine the 52 Brigade diary also in WO95/544. The organisation of the batteries seems to have been quite volatile.

Default Info on Great War Forum

There is a very useful thread on the Great War Forum: https://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/fo...owtopic=135632 - two pages of posts, so a lot to read.

It covers Siege Batteries in 1918; and there is discussion about exactly what is available at Kew.

    Hope this helps.
