How do I get access to a war office copy of the gazette that my grandfather was mentioned in ?

Not sure if a 'war office copy' is something different - but if it's an entry in the London (or Edinburgh) Gazette you are looking for - it can be searched online here - https://www.thegazette.co.uk/

Just a suggestion too - since they 'improved' their website earlier this year the search seems to have become much more difficult to use - one way around this is to use Google Advanced Search - use the specific phrase option that you are looking for and put the gazette site web address (as above) into the box titled 'site or domain'

Once you've (hopefully) got the the details of the issue of the gazette that the entry you're looking for was in - it is much easier then to use that info on the gazette site search - and when you have found the entry on their site then it's possible to move back or forward page by page if you need more info on the entry

Sounds long winded - but does seem to work pretty well
    Good Luck
