    Default Northern Ireland

    Hi

I'm not really a genealogy novice, but have not had to trace family lines in Northern Ireland before. Are there any (free) websites to do family records searches for NI (esp Belfast)? I do also have a subscription to Ancestry so any pointers to using that site for Belfast records much appreciated as my efforts have not produced so far!

GRONI now have an online service. I don't know any more because I don't have any need of it.

The GRONI site is good, and cheap to use (£2 to see an original certificate on-line) but the on-line indexes do not show any births less than 100 years, Marriages 75 years or deaths less than 50 years. So if you are looking for any of those events, you either need to go to GRONI in person (£8 fee for access) and look them up yourself, or e-mail GRONI who will do look-ups, but for a fee. (Check with them first).

On Scotlandspeople you can see events within the restricted periods, but just can’t view them on-line. However on the GRONI site they are withheld altogether.

Other useful sites for NI research are the Griffiths revaluation records (shows tenants/owners from the initial Griffiths valuation through to 1929. Can tell you when people died or moved away, as well as who succeeded them):

    https://www.proni.gov.uk/index/search...ves/val12b.htm

    Also PRONI’s wills site:

    https://www.proni.gov.uk/index/search..._calendars.htm

That gives you the abstracts (summaries) for all probated wills in Londonderry, Armagh or Belfast probate registries from 1858 to 1966. In addition many of the wills themselves are on-line too. (They are in the process of adding the missing years).
