The line of my grandfather, Taylor "Pony" Massingale, may go back to Gilbert Marsyngaile (or Marsingale, etc.) butcher b 1520 Whitby d 1592 Whitby wife Elizabeth but I have not found documentation to verify.

Found a book on the internet, "Index of Wills in the York Registry: 1585 to 1594." It includes an entry for "Marsyngaile, Gilbert Whytbie Butcher Will dated 26 Aug 1592 Probate date 28 Mar 1593 Vol 25 Fol 1225." I would like to obtain a photocopy of the Will. How do I do this?

From what I can find out the earliest deposited parish registers for Whitby (Yorkshire) begin in 1600, so unfortunately I think your chances of finding documentation for earlier years are slight to zero.

I don't know if any of the links on this page could provide hints on where to look.

I have, by chance, discovered that there is another Whitby in England, in Cheshire.

It would appear that it was a township rather than a parish and didn't have its own church, people worshipping either at Eastham St Mary or Stoak St Lawrence.

Not very helpful I'm afraid, but most of us think we're lucky to get back to 1700, so to have (possible) ancestors back almost another two hundred years is a big bonus.

Thanks for the information. I have emailed a request for a copy.
