    Red face Elusive Susannah

    Hello out there,
I appear to have run into a rather thick brick-wall.
I am looking for a Susannah Titley abt 1837. I do know that she married George Bucknall (1837-1875) 28 May 1860 in Walsall. he was a chain Maker .
I have their marriage cert which shows her fathers name as Thomas Titley Miner.
What I cannot seem to find after much searching,is Susannah's birth which hopefully will give me more info.
What I would like to know is where Thomas Titley originated from .

Any help guidance on this would be greatly appreciated.

Who are the witnesses on the marriage? Could they be relations? Have you found her in census' afterher marriage to George BUCKNALL?

edited to add: What was their addresses on their marriage certificate?

FMP has transcribed her name was Witley in the Parish Records and his as BUCKNOLL from the Civil Registration Index!

I suspect that this ability to mis-transcribe might be part of the problem.

I looked in the 1851 census and could only find one Susannah Titley in Staffordshire, but she was born in 1807.

However I have found a baptism at Darlaston, St Lawrence, Staffordshire which could be her:

24 January 1836 to Thomas and Martha. They were living at Catherine's Cross and Thomas was a moulder.

I think that Darlaston is Walsall so that fits.

There is a marriage in the same church of a Thomas Titley and Martha Evans on 25 August 1823. The parish record, at that time, did not record any parents. They were both single and from that parish.

In the same church I cannot see a baptism for Thomas, but for Martha:
19 Nov 1806, parents William and Hannah

OK, I think I have found "Susannah" in 1881 census: 90 Pleck Road, Foreign Wallsall Ref: RG11 piece 2823 folio 72 pg 18 & Folio 73 pg 19

Hannah BUCKNAL, widow, age 44 (b. 1836-1837 Darlaston), works at Hinge factory
James WILKES, widower. age 81 (b. 1799-1800 Darlaston) Hingeworker unable to work
James WILKES, son, age 29 (b. 1851-1852) engineer
Martha BUCKNAL, daughter age 18 (b. 1862-1863 Wallsall) Buckle Tonguer
Sarah Jane BUCKNAL, daughter age 16 (b. 1864-1865 Wallsall) Buckle Coverer
George BUCKNAL, son, age 13 (b. 1867-1868 Wallsall) Leather Worker Machinest
Mary BUCKNAL, daughter, age 10 (b. 1869-1870 Wallsall)

This ties in with a baptism of Martha daughter of George & Susannah at St. John's Wallsall, Staffordshire 15th September 1861 ( from family search)

I wonder if James WILKES the elder was her step father?

I believe in 1841 Susannah was using the name Hannah.

At Woods Bank, Darlaston Ref: HO107 piece 979 book 2 folio 14 pg 21

    Martha Titley age 38
    Elizabeth Titley age 13
    William Titley age 11
    John Titley age 6
    Hannah Titley age 5 b. 1835-1836
Henry Titley age 2 all born Staffordshire

And in 1851 at catherine's Cross, Darlaston Ref: HO107 piece 2022 folio 52 pg 44

James WILKES age 46 Gun lock filer
Martha WILKES age 44 born Moxley, Staffordshire
Hannah WILKES age 15 born Darlaston Hinge Painter
Mary WILKES age 12 born darlaston, Hinge painter (possibly Mary/Elizabeth)
John WILKES age 18 born Darlaston, Miner (Iron) born Darlaston

so the Titley children adopted the Wilkes surname as I did

    Thank you .
The info on certs is Bridgeman st Walsall marr in St Peters. The names of the Witnesses do not appear to be related to them.
Georges father is Joseph (Block Maker) Thomas Titley Miner.
I looked for them in the 1861 Census
    but not found.
I did find a Hannah Bucknall without husband .
What puzzles me is that I cannot find them in the 1861 census.

    Thanks again

I believe in 1861 they are just round the corner from Pleck Road at Bridgeman Street. RG9 piece 2014 folio 46 pg 15

James Wilkes (transcribed as Wilker on ancestry) age 59 occupied as a hinge filer born Darlaston
Martha WILKES age 57 born Darlaston ( not unusual for discrepancies in placed of birth)
John Wilkes, son age 27 Coal miner born Darlaston
James Wilkes, "son" age 7 born Darlaston.

I can't seem to find Susanna(h)/Hannah & George BUCKNAL(L) at all in the 1861 census. They are certainly not living in Bridgeman Road at the time of the 1861 census, and could be just a few roads away, or could have moved to a nearby city!
