Default The beginning of Radar and the personnel.

Hello there, My father worked during the war years and from 1936 onwards for a unit of the RAF called The Civilian Ariel Erection Unit. I think they were based at Kidbrooke Air Force Base but travelled all over the country during and before the ward erecting radar pylons. Can anyone give me - or point me in the right direction - information regarding this unit. Dad received a medal during the 60's for his work but unfortunately it was lost during a house move. Many thanks if you can help.

Its amazing what you can find if you "google" - have you ever heard of the Ex-RAF Aerial Erectors Association? You will find their web site below:

I got the impression from the question that he was a civilian employee in which case there won't be any service records and his employment records are likely to be extremely hard to find.

The site mentioned by Megan states that the forebears were civilians

    Default RAF Museum

Hi Westie and a very warm welcome to Brit Gen

The RAF Museum has a useful page about the development of radar and lots of early pictures:

    Might be useful for background?
