British Men - Serving in Spanish Civil War

Hi Firstly my name is Claire, and I am a proud daughter of generations who fought to this day in the military.

Two of my three sons have participated in overseas tours in Africa, and Afganistan.

My question today, is where can I find online records for British Men who served in Spanish Civil war in 1930's?

My grandfather, orphaned at four....but in his early teens and when the opportunity would arise he'd rrun away from the orphanages here in the UK.

The Story goes....He stowed away on a boat and landed in Spain during the Civil War. So, finding records online or in UK would be very helpful.


He also served in WW2, and was recognised in despatches several times.

Both my Dad and uncle, followed him into the military.

The International Brigades Memorial Trust runs a very helpful website, with a big section on British volunteers: https://www.international-brigades.or...r/introduction. You will see that there is also a list of the men who lost their lives. I think this site will be a good starting point.

You should also take a look at Discovery, the online catalogue of The National Archives (TNA): https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk. (Hope I've remembered the address correctly!). When you get to the catalogue, enter your query in this way: (surname) AND (spanish civil war). Then apply more filters to the results if they are unmanageable. There is bound to be stuff at TNA but it might take a bit of finding, so you might have to re-word your query several times.
