    Hello dtw1312,

    Welcome to British-Genealogy.

The MoD still hold service records for WW2 personnel. However according to this guide information that they hold for RN servicemen is limited because the service records were released to the individual on discharge.
If your father-in-law is still alive then he can apply for the remaining records free of charge. Otherwise it will cost you £30 (and you need to send a copy of the death certificate).
In either case, be prepared for quite a wait because everyone is applying for records.

    Pam
