His medal card says that he qualified for the 1914 Star on 15 Aug 1914, which means that he was with the Regiment when war broke out. They (the 2nd Btn) were in Dublin when war was declared, and landed at le Havre on 15 Aug 1914. Sadly, it looks as though his service records were among the 60% destroyed during WW2.
You could look for him in the 1911 census, it might show whether he's already a soldier then.

The well respected Army Service Numbers blogsite suggests that a man issued with number 7471 by the KOSBs would have enlisted in the early part of 1901
It shows -
7437 joined on 18th January 1901
7802 joined on 20th January 1902
1901 census might be worth a look too

WO100, the Campaign Medal Rolls shows 7471 Pte McFarlane P as entitled to the Queen's South Africa Medal with clasps for the Transvaal and SA 1902. So enlistment in 1901 sounds like a reasonable guess.
So the answer to "when did he join in WW1?" is that he didn't - he had been in the regiment since about 1901.
