Thumbs up WW2, HMS APHIS frank e. w. Lacey 1942.

Looking for my grandads service records and I am looking for the missions he and his ships crew fought throughout their service. I am looking for crew diaries and photos from other sources. He had written letters to his family serving as bosun on various cargow ships in 1960-63 and he said he was on HMS APHIS in the Mediterranean or Malta in1942. How can I get the war records for free?

    Can you help me.

Free? Google on the ship's name, I think.

The MOD has the service records, and will charge 30quid for a copy.

    Hello, and welcome to British-Genealogy.

The bad news is that you won't get much for free. The minimum you'll get away with is either the cost of the train fare to Kew/Kew Bridge to visit The National Archives (TNA), or hiring a researcher to trawl through the records for you.

First of all have a read about the Royal Navy after WW1 records in this guide. There is a link to follow if you still want to send for your grandfather's records. The records will cost you £30, plus a death certificate.

If he was in the Merchant Navy, I think the records are still at TNA. This guide might help.

    Hi there,

Very few if any Records of Service are Free anywhere in the UK I'm afraid. You may occassionally find small databases of records for free and I know of several freely available datasets for the Boer War. The problem with Free Records however is you cannot guarantee the accuracy nor are they ever as detailed as you want. Forces War Records offers a few free datasets such as Imperial prisoners of war captured by the Japanese and a Medieval name database.

If you want to access Records of Personnel from the Second World War then you must contact the Ministry of Defence directly as they currently hold all records of the post-1922 period as restricted from public dissemination.

Please see the information on the following link:

    Regards,
