Default Family history can of worms!!

I'm researching my family history and have been told that my Great Grandfather served in WW1 but I can't find anything about him! He was called Richard Francis/Frances Whincop born in 1896 in Bridlington. I have searched on here and on find my past but can't find anything! Where else can I go? I have managed to find info on 2 family members I never knew about!

    Hi

There is a Medal Index Card on Ancestry for -

    Name:
    Richard F Whincop

    Regiment or Corps:
East Yorkshire Regiment, East Yorkshire Regiment

    Regimental Number:
    2372, 200571

Read about them here - https://www.1914-1918.net/soldiers/campaignmedals.html
    and https://www.1914-1918.net/soldiers/interpretmic.html
Unfortunately Ancestry was attacked last week and is still getting itself sorted, so I cant view it.
    No service records unfortunately.
Read this to see what else you could do - https://www.1914-1918.net/soldiers/research.html
    regards

    Robert

Is it just the military records you are looking for?

Are you sure he wasn't born in 1895 in the Sculcoates registration district?

And did he die on 8 Jan 1963?

Having 2 numbers - initially 4 digits - later 6 digits strongly suggests he was with a Territorial Battalion of the EYR. The number he received in the 1917 renumbering of the TF was allocated to the 4th battalion.

His Medal Card - as mentioned above gives a date of entry into a theatre of war of 17th April 1915 - consistent with the landing of the 1/4th battalion at Boulogne on that date. At the beginning of the war they were based in Hull - if that ties in with what you know about him

It looks as though the war diaries of the battalion have been digitised in 4 sections that can be downloaded (at a cost) from the NA site - https://discovery.nationalarchives.go...WO%2095%2F2834 - the bottom 4 sections

He is unlikely to be mentioned by name but it should give you an idea of what the battalion was up to
