This new thread is part of the continuing research into the descendants of John Levey and Getrude Lyons previously posted on in a series of Levey and related families. Alfred Levey son of John Levey and Gertrude Levey was born in Montreal Canada in 1855. He appears in the US 1870 Census New York Ward 22 District 11 -M593 1013 337B 66(Copyright National Archives, US) in the household of George WOLF- George Wolf 32 Dry Goods b England; Bertha wife 29 b England; Charles son 1 b NY; Henry ANDRADE 15 b England; Hubert? WOLF 18 b England; CARLINE LEVEY 16 b Canada; ALFRED LEVEY b Canada.
Next door to the Wolf were the Lewis MORRIS family from Prussia. There are links between the Levey and Morris lines through marriage but I have yet to confirm whether or not this Morris family is related.
The New York Passenger list shows Alfred Levey 29 arrival 7 Nov 1884 from Liverpool to NY.
Alfred Levey married Jeanette Flora DAVIDSON in 1878- The Jewish Victorian. Genealogical Information from the Jewish Newspapers 1871-1880 transcribed and edited by Doreen Berger, 1999 Pub Robert Boyd- MARRIAGE 30.10.1878 at Dalston Synagogue, youngest daughter of J E DAVIDSON of "Springfield", Canonbury Park South late of Liverpool, to Alfred son of the late JOHN LEVEY of Montreal, Canada- Jacob E Davidson father; Sophia Davidson sister; Gabriel S WILLING brother in law; Lewis Levey brother in law. Further references in Berger indicate that Dorothea Willing married to Salamon Andrew Willing was the sister to Jacob Davidson's wife. Dorothea Willing had died in 1874 and Esther Davidson eldest daughter of Jacob Davidson had died at 30 Grove Street Liverpool age 18 on 15.2.1871

The birth of Gertrude daughter of Alfred Levey and Jeanette Davidson suggests that for a period of time they were living in South Africa before returning to the UK.

This post provides further data on Jeanette Flora Levey nee DAVIDSON. She died Dec qtr 1925 Wandsworth 1d 711 age 64. She was a widow in the 1901 and 1911 British Census.

I will post briefly on the descendants of the above Levey children and am aware that some are still living.

There is a potential issue regarding the death of Alfred Levey and whether or not he was actually deceased. The possible reason for this is that an advertisement appeared in The Hebrew Standard of Australasia Friday 11 June 1909 requesting- Whereabouts of Alfred Levey watchmaker a native of Canada but resident in Australia. He had a daughter Estella and two brothers Henry and Joe. These names match those of the brothers and daughter of Alfred Levey who married Jeanette Davidson and further research is needed to confirm what happened to Alfred Levey born Montreal Canada.

This follow up post adds data on the Alfred Levey and Jeanette Flora Davidson lines. Their son John Hoffnung Levey married Beatrice JACKSON who was the widow of Edward DAVIDSON brother of Jeanette. Edward married Beatrice Jackson March qtr 1899 Fulham 1a 499. There is a death record for Edward Davidson March qtr 1912 Hackney 1b 560 age 57. In the 1911 British Census- 96 Petgerton Road Canonbury N Islington RG14 977 ( Crown Copyright,TNA)-

There is reference in the London Gazette Archives to John Hoffnung Levey's WW1 war service including his award and promotion. He appears in the 1935 London Electoral Rolls at Pennine Road living with Beatrice; Olga Irene Levey; Sylvia Levey.
There is a family tree which has his son Norman Maurice Levey 1916-1991 who was to change his names by Deed Poll-The London Gazette 2 May 1949- Norman Maurice LEE 23a Falkland Ave Finchley N3 London Property Manager renounced .. his former name of Maurice Norman Levey and in lieu thereafter assumed the name of Norman Maurice Lee. Birth Index record- Maurice N Levey - mother's maiden name JACKSON Sept qtr 1916 Brentford 3a 313. The death index record- Norman Maurice Lee Dec qtr 1991 Watford Hertfordshire 10 903.
